APpetite
a Comedy Short
>> A young woman bites off more than she can chew to satisfy her dating habit <<
Steph is a predatory dater. She always insists on paying. When a large bill arrives, she’s nowhere to be seen, for Steph is a serial dine-and-dasher. Wearing elaborate guises, she believes she can slip away from the table and not suffer the consequences. But everyone has to pay the bill in the end.
APPETITE is a comedy short film, based on a true story. In 2018, a man in the US was found guilty of repeatedly running out on the bill, after a spree of expensive first dates. The media dubbed him the 'serial dine-and-dasher’. Katrin heard his curious story on the radio and immediately thought it had all the elements to be a great short film - and all the better and more surprising if the protagonist were a woman! The idea was turned into a funny and surreal script by her partner and talented writer Sam Oates.
The intention for this production was to have a pre-dominantly female crew. It only seemed right to have women tell this story about a woman, and in doing so make a statement about the lack of women in certain roles in the film industry.
Our production manager Vanessa Bundschu recommended Xuemeng Li to co-direct the film. Xuemeng was born in China, raised in the USA and is currently based in London, where we shot Appetite. She brought a fresh pair of eyes to the script and offered a new perspective on the comedy. It has been a joy to work with her and to have the support of so many incredibly talented and committed people.
